Ed's Plant World

Ed's Plant World, a busy garden center in Brandywine, Maryland, is hiring outdoor help.  Experience with plants is a plus but not required.  The successful applicant must have good customer service skills and be willing to work on Saturday and Sunday, with some weekday afternoon work possible.  Starting salary is $8 per hour.  Interested students should contact Larry via telephone at 301-372-6690 or via e-mail at larry@edsplantworld.com.

Prince George's County Department of Parks & Recreation Aquatics Team

Prince George's County's Department of Parks & Recreation Acquatic Team is looking for enthusiastic employees, ages 16 and older, to work as lifeguards, pool managers, swim lesson instructors/aides, swim fitness instructors, and customer service representatives this summer at salaries ranging from $11 to $17/hour.  Aquatic training and certification classes are available through M-NCPPC.  Lifeguard participants who successfully complete an M-NCPPC Lifeguard Training Certification course may be eligible for a $100 refund if hired.

The federal government has created a program called USA Jobs: Pathways for Students and Recent Graduates to Federal Careers.  Visit their website at www.usajobs.gov to search for job openings in the federal government ranging from internships to summer job work programs to full time jobs.  New openings appear as federal agencies post them so interested students are encouraged to check the website frequently.

Prince George's County Government

PG County's Office of Human Resources Management invites applications for the position of Service Aide with their Summer Youth Enrichment Program.  This is a six-week entry-level introduction to public service for the youth of Prince George's County, which offers enriching and constructive summer work experiences throughout the government in various departments and agencies.  Students must be a resident of PG County and between the ages of 15 and 19 on June 17, 2014.  Salaries range from $7.25 to $10.00 and applications must be submitted by March 21, 2014.  Interested students must apply on

Science and Engineering Apprentice Program (SEAP)

SEAP is sponsored by the American Society for Engineering Education and the Department of Defense and offers summer internship opportunities to high school students interested in careers in science and engineering.  The 8-week program allows students to gain hands-on experience with experienced scientists and engineers and participants earn a $2,000 educational stipend.  For information visit their website at http://www.usaeop.com/programs/SEAP.  The deadline is February 25.

Youth Engagement Through Science (YES)

Youth Engagement through Science (YES) is the Smithsonian Institution's 16-week summer program which allows students to gain practical experience in a Smithsonian science career such as sorting insects from Kenya, assisting with animal care, extracting and preparing fossils for study and much more.  Smithsonian interns will work in Smithsonian exhibit and learning spaces, see behind-the-scenes areas of the Smithsonian's facilities, have access to experts in the field, and they receive a $1,750 stipend.  Interns work from June 24 through August.  For information visit

District of Columbia Parks & Recreation
